About REVEL
WHO WE ARE
REVEL is an Austin-based classical band devoted to presenting terrific chamber music concerts that move, delight and inspire—we call them revels. This means that the focus is on sharing and celebrating great music, not protocol. It means that you can come as you are, clap when you feel like it, and let yourself get caught up in the music like no one is watching. In an effort to cultivate both an understanding of classical music and an appreciation for its place in modern society as a relevant, living art from, REVEL’s mission is to bring an exceptional classical music experience to the community that is devoid of all pretension, and yet exhibits the highest artistic caliber.
When we hosted our launch party in March of 2009 at The Church House in Austin, we weren’t quite sure what we were up to. Now that we’ve produced about a dozen different programs, released our first CD, and performed in numerous venues around the country and the world, a few things are becoming clear:
We’re not sure who invented the rule that you have to sit up straight in prim rows in formal clothing and complete silence to hear Classical music. But it doesn’t apply here.
We are passionate about great music, and so are you, and we all like it best when the performances and the venues are informal—more like they were originally intended to be. And it’s fun for everyone when the musicians and the audience get to hang out together before, during, and after the show.
Throughout the ages, composers and performers have had their back-room parties and jam sessions where the real music took shape. So, when REVEL seems most radical, we’re really just going back to our roots. We’re following in the footsteps of some of the musicians we admire most: Bach, with his after-hours coffee house soirees; Schubert, who invited musician friends to his pad to play and hear his latest pieces; Chopin, Liszt, Paganini, and many, many more who let their hair down (we’ve seen pictures!) when the stage lights were turned off and the real music-making got started.
